Why is Dior Sauvage the most cloned fragrance ever made?
Because nothing in it is hard to buy. Sauvage is built on ambroxan, a synthetic first made at Firmenich in Geneva in 1950 from clary sage extract. At least five fragrance houses now sell the identical molecule — CAS 6790-58-5 — under their own names, so any perfumer on earth can order it by the kilo.
Real whale ambergris, the natural material ambroxan imitates, has historically traded well above €40,000 per kilogram. The synthetic costs a few hundred euros per kilogram. Givaudan has been brewing its version, Ambrofix, from sugarcane since 2009. IFF sells Ambermor. dsm-Firmenich sells Ambrox Super. V. Mane Fils sells Orcanox. Symrise sells it as ambroxide crystals.
What this actually means for you
A fragrance is expensive when its materials are rare, when the formula uses a lot of them, or when the name on the bottle is worth money. Sauvage is only the third kind. Dior names bergamot from Reggio di Calabria, Sichuan pepper, elemi and ambroxan on its own product page — every one of those is a catalogue material any lab can order. That is why 33 documented clones exist and why none of them had to break a patent to get close.
The rest of the gap is tax and logistics. India charges 20% basic customs duty on imported perfume under HSN 3303, plus agriculture cess, social welfare surcharge and 18% IGST on the duty-inclusive value. Roughly ₹49 of tax lands on every ₹100 of assessed import value before anyone has paid for a shop, a shelf or an ad.
So a ₹15,600 bottle is not ₹15,600 of perfume. It is a few hundred rupees of liquid, a large tax bill, a global marketing budget, and a name that sells one bottle every three seconds worldwide.
Which Sauvage clones can you actually buy in India?
Seven, if you count only the ones with a live India listing and a real price. Sorted by price per millilitre. Third-party "accuracy percentages" are opinion, not measurement, so they are not in this table.

What the price column hides. Sense is the only bottle here under 60 ml. A 100 ml bottle of something you dislike is 100 ml of regret. At ₹799 for 50 ml, the cost of being wrong is one dinner.
Same materials. Same shape. ₹799.
A 25% EDP on bergamot, black pepper, lavender, geranium, ambroxan and vetiver — six notes that all sit inside Dior's published Sauvage pyramid.
- Top · bergamot, black pepper
- Heart · lavender, geranium
- Base · ambroxan, vetiver
How close is each dupe on paper?
Dior publishes eleven notes across the Sauvage EDT pyramid: bergamot, Sichuan pepper, pink pepper, lavender, geranium, patchouli, vetiver, elemi, ambroxan, cedar and labdanum. We counted how many appear in each clone's own published note list. Not a smell test — a paperwork test.
| Fragrance | Overlap | Ambroxan? | Adds what Sauvage lacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armaf CDN Urban Man Elixir | 10 of 11 | Yes | Saffron, jasmine, orange blossom, tagetes |
| Ajmal Kuro | 7 of 11 | Ambergris | Cypress, musk |
| Sense Souvage | 6 of 11 | Yes | Nothing — all six notes are Sauvage notes |
| Maison Alhambra Salvo | 4 of 11 | Yes | Star anise, nutmeg, vanilla |
| Lattafa Asad | 3 of 11 | No | Pineapple, tobacco, coffee, iris |
| Zara Vibrant Leather | 2 of 11 | No | Leather, bamboo, papyrus, lemon |
| Armaf The Pride | 1 of 11 | No | Cinnamon, nutmeg, oakmoss, tonka |
Counted by hand from each brand's published note list against Dior's. "Black pepper" counted against "pepper," "cedarwood" against "cedar."
Where the clone databases get it wrong
Popular clone sites score Armaf The Pride at 82% similar to Sauvage. On paper it shares exactly one note — bergamot. It is a good, cheap, spicy-woody scent that reads "expensive designer," but it is not a Sauvage clone. Maison Alhambra Salvo scores lower on those sites yet matches Dior's EDP pyramid almost note for note. If your reference is the EDP, Salvo is the technical winner at ₹18/ml.
What the overlap number doesn't tell you
A shared ingredient list is not a shared smell. Proportion decides everything, and no brand publishes proportions. What the count is good for is catching the bottles that are not even trying: two of eleven notes and no ambroxan anywhere — Zara Vibrant Leather — is not a near-miss Sauvage. It is a different scent the internet files under the wrong name.
Best dupe for Sauvage Elixir?
Lattafa Asad, around ₹2,799 for 100 ml — a mood match, not a formula match. Dior's Elixir names grapefruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, AOP Nyons lavender with coumarin, and an amber accord with Haitian vetiver, patchouli and licorice. Asad shares three of those, but lands in the same place: dense, sweet, spicy, high-projection, cold-weather.
Set expectations honestly. Nothing at ₹2,799 will have Elixir's lavender quality. An Asad bottle scratches the itch four days out of five and irritates you on the fifth.
What is the Arab dupe of Dior Sauvage?
Six of the seven clones here come from Gulf houses — Armaf, Lattafa, Maison Alhambra, Ajmal. They did not stumble into the dupe business; they were making high-concentration attars long before Dior existed. Three things set an Arab clone apart:
- Higher oil load — concentrations Western brands reserve for "Parfum" tiers, which is why an Armaf often out-projects the Dior.
- Sweeter, denser bases — amber, labdanum, benzoin and vanilla pushed harder, which suits Indian climates.
- They rarely copy one bottle — CDN Urban Man Elixir is openly Sauvage crossed with Creed Aventus.
The pick: Armaf Club de Nuit Urban Man Elixir, ₹3,399 for 105 ml. Ten of Dior's eleven notes, ambroxan on the box, and the sillage most people are chasing.
Which Zara perfume is a Sauvage dupe?
None of them, honestly. Zara Vibrant Leather — ₹1,550 for 60 ml — lists bergamot, lemon, bamboo, leather, patchouli and papyrus. Two notes in common and no ambroxan. It is a good leather-woody scent, closer to the Bleu de Chanel and Aventus lane, just filed under the wrong reference on half the dupe lists online, most of which are copying each other rather than reading the note lists.
The other Zara question people ask
Zara's YSL-adjacent reputation rests on its gourmand-floral side rather than its men's line — the coffee-and-vanilla scents compared to Black Opium. Zara India rotates its catalogue constantly and drops SKUs without notice, which is the real problem with building a signature scent around it: the bottle you love may simply stop existing. If you want a YSL Y alternative that stays in stock, we wrote about that separately.
Why Reddit keeps naming the same three
Reddit's fragrance communities skew American and European. Their picks are priced in dollars, shipped from US decant houses, and rarely account for what clears Indian customs. Armaf CDN Urban Man Elixir, Salvo and Asad survive the translation because those houses distribute properly in India. Dua, Alexandria and most US clone houses do not — importing one bottle yourself costs more in duty than the bottle.

Is Dior Sauvage a red flag?
No — but the joke has a source. In February 2026 a TikTok video calling Sauvage a red-flag scent was picked up by The Independent, citing a poll of 2,000 women who had experienced infidelity: 25% said the men who cheated on them wore Sauvage. Read it carefully: dating-site poll, self-selected sample, no control group. Sauvage sells roughly one bottle every three seconds worldwide. When a quarter of a country's men wear one scent, a quarter of any group of men wears it too.
Ubiquity is a real reason to hesitate, just not a moral one — and it is an argument for a well-made alternative in the same shape.
The part that is true
Ubiquity is a genuine reason to hesitate, just not a moral one. If your goal is to smell like you rather than like the room, the argument against Sauvage is that four other men at the wedding are wearing it — not that it says something about your character.
So which one should you buy?
Four honest answers, depending on what you are optimising for.
-
Best first bottle
Sense Souvage
₹799 · 50 ml · ₹16/ml
Cheapest way to find out if you like this smell at all. All six notes sit inside Dior's pyramid. A mistake costs ₹799 instead of ₹15,600.
Add to cart -
Closest to the EDT
Armaf CDN Urban Man Elixir
₹3,399 · 105 ml · ₹32/ml
Ten of Dior's eleven notes, ambroxan included. Heavier and sweeter than the original. The technical winner if budget allows.
-
Closest to the EDP
Maison Alhambra Salvo
₹1,799 · 100 ml · ₹18/ml
Matches the EDP's published pyramid almost exactly. Best value per millilitre in a full-size bottle.
-
For the Elixir
Lattafa Asad
₹2,799 · 100 ml · ₹28/ml
Mood match rather than formula match, and the one Indian buyers keep re-buying. Do not expect Elixir's lavender.
★★★★★
"Two months in, I wear it every single day. Better longevity than I expected at this price."
★★★★★
"Wore it through a full office day and could still smell it on my way home. Worth every rupee."
And if you want the Dior itself
Buy it — it is a good fragrance and there is no shame in wanting the real thing. Just buy it from Nykaa, Sephora India, Tira or a Dior counter, where authenticity is not a question. The cheapest legitimate route is duty-free on an international trip; a marketplace seller with no invoice is where counterfeits live.
Questions people actually ask
What are good dupes for Dior Sauvage in India?
Five are worth your money: Sense Souvage (₹799/50 ml), Maison Alhambra Salvo (₹1,799/100 ml), Ajmal Kuro (₹2,400/90 ml), Lattafa Asad (₹2,799/100 ml) and Armaf Club de Nuit Urban Man Elixir (₹3,399/105 ml). All five ship within India without customs delays.
Which Zara perfume is a dupe for Dior Sauvage?
None closely. Zara Vibrant Leather (₹1,550/60 ml) is the one usually named, but its notes are bergamot, lemon, bamboo, leather, patchouli and papyrus — two in common with Sauvage and no ambroxan.
Is Ajmal Kuro a clone of Dior Sauvage?
A close relative rather than a clone. It shares seven of Sauvage EDT's eleven notes but uses an ambergris-musk base instead of ambroxan and adds cypress — same family, softer and slightly greener.
What is the best dupe for Dior Sauvage Elixir?
Lattafa Asad, around ₹2,799 for 100 ml. It matches Elixir's dense, sweet, spicy character rather than its formula — only three notes overlap with Dior's published Elixir pyramid.
Why is Dior Sauvage called a red flag?
A February 2026 TikTok trend, amplified by The Independent, cited a dating-site poll of 2,000 women who had experienced infidelity: 25% said their cheating partners wore Sauvage. Self-selected survey, no control group — and Sauvage is the world's best-selling fragrance, so it appears everywhere.
What is the best dupe of Dior Sauvage EDP?
Maison Alhambra Salvo, ₹1,799 for 100 ml. Its pyramid — bergamot, Sichuan pepper, lavender, star anise, nutmeg, ambroxan, vanilla — matches Dior's EDP note for note, at a ninth of ₹156/ml.
What is the best Dior Sauvage clone overall?
Armaf CDN Urban Man Elixir on accuracy (₹32/ml). Salvo on value (₹18/ml). Sense Souvage on risk — the only bottle small enough that disliking it is not an expensive mistake.
Where is the cheapest place to buy Dior Sauvage?
Duty-free during international travel, which sidesteps India's roughly 49% effective import tax. Domestically: Nykaa, Sephora India, Tira and Dior counters at ₹13,000–₹17,800 per 100 ml. Half-price marketplace listings are counterfeits.
Does Dior Sauvage attract women?
No fragrance attracts anyone by chemistry — there is no evidence for human pheromone attractants in perfume. Sauvage reads clean, expensive and familiar, and familiarity is the mechanism. An alternative in the same shape does the same job.
Can I wear Dior Sauvage every day?
Yes — the EDT was built as a daily fragrance. The caution is spray count, not frequency. Ambroxan projects heavily, so two sprays is plenty in an Indian office. Most complaints about Sauvage are complaints about somebody applying six.
Which Dior Sauvage sells best, and which smells best?
Globally the 2015 EDT. In India the EDP leads — 1,452 Nykaa ratings against the EDT's 618 and Parfum's 120. On smell: EDT is sharpest for summer, EDP rounder for evenings, Parfum warmest, Elixir densest and most interesting.
Why is Sauvage the most cloned fragrance ever made?
Because nothing in it is hard to buy. It is built on ambroxan (CAS 6790-58-5), first made at Firmenich in 1950 and now sold by at least five houses — Givaudan's Ambrofix, IFF's Ambermor, Ambrox Super, Orcanox, Symrise's ambroxide. Real ambergris trades above €40,000/kg; the synthetic costs a few hundred. Add India's ~49% effective import tax on HSN 3303 and a ₹15,600 bottle is a few hundred rupees of liquid, a tax bill and a name.
What are the top 10 luxury perfume dupes in India?
By category rather than hype: Sauvage (Souvage, Salvo, CDN Urban Man Elixir), Bleu de Chanel, YSL Y, Creed Aventus (Armaf Club de Nuit Intense), Sauvage Elixir (Lattafa Asad), Acqua di Parma Colonia, Gucci Flora, Victoria's Secret Bombshell, Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade and Amouage Interlude. Sense makes eight of those at ₹799 each.
Which Zara perfume smells like YSL?
Zara's gourmand-floral scents — the coffee-and-vanilla ones — are the ones usually compared to YSL Black Opium, not its men's line. Zara India rotates its fragrance catalogue constantly and discontinues without notice, so a scent you commit to may quietly disappear.
What is the Arab dupe of Dior Sauvage?
Armaf Club de Nuit Urban Man Elixir (₹3,399/105 ml) is the strongest. It shares ten of Sauvage EDT's eleven published notes including ambroxan, and Armaf builds it as Sauvage crossed with Creed Aventus. Gulf houses ship higher oil loads, so it projects harder than the Dior does.
Which are the best perfume dupes overall?
The ones built on synthetics rather than rare naturals. Ambroxan, iso E super, ambrettolide and calone are catalogue materials any lab can buy, so fragrances leaning on them clone accurately. Scents built on real oud, orris butter or natural jasmine absolute almost never dupe well at any price.
Which is better, YSL or Dior?
Different jobs. Dior Sauvage is fresh, peppery and safe — it works everywhere and offends nobody. YSL Y is brighter and more metallic-aromatic; La Nuit de L'Homme is warmer and more evening-leaning. If you want one bottle for everything, Sauvage. If you want character, YSL.
Is Dior Sauvage overused or overrated?
Overused, not overrated. It sells roughly one bottle every three seconds worldwide because it is genuinely well made and almost impossible to dislike. That same ubiquity is the honest argument against it: at any Indian wedding you will not be the only person wearing it.

How we put this together
Commercial disclosure
Sense Perfume makes and sells Souvage, one of the ten fragrances compared here. We used the same price-per-millilitre method for every product including our own, and we have said plainly where a competitor beats us — Armaf CDN Urban Man Elixir is more accurate to the EDT than our bottle is, and Salvo is more accurate to the EDP. Check the numbers yourself.
- Note lists from each brand's own published pyramid — Dior's product pages, Ajmal India, Zara India, and Indian retailer listings for the Armaf, Lattafa and Maison Alhambra bottles.
- India prices checked against live listings on 19 August 2026.
- Import duty from published Indian customs schedules for HSN 3303 — 20% basic customs duty plus cess, surcharge and 18% IGST.
- Ambroxan background from published perfumery-materials references covering its 1950 synthesis at Firmenich and the trade names under which Givaudan, IFF, dsm-Firmenich, V. Mane Fils and Symrise sell CAS 6790-58-5.
- The "red flag" claim traced back to its origin: a February 2026 TikTok trend reported by The Independent, citing a poll commissioned by a dating website.
What we did not do
- No blind smell panel. Nobody in the Indian dupe market runs one, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
- No GC-MS analysis. Note overlap here is counted from published lists — paperwork, not chemistry.
- No controlled longevity trial. The 8–10 hour figure for Souvage comes from our own wear-testing in Indore, on our own skin.
- We did not copy third-party "accuracy percentages" into our tables. Those numbers are opinion presented as measurement, and for Armaf The Pride they contradict the published note lists badly.
